Uncomfortable Work Station

I work on a laptop computer all day, typically filling out spreadsheets, and lately I've noticed that my hands and fingers hurt. It's definitely not carpal tunnel syndrome, but it's painful. I know this can be resolved if I had a more ergonomic work station. Do you have any suggestions for how I can retrofit my desk and computer to make them both more ergonomic?
